Did I lose my physical model?

When you start the tool and open a design everything opens automatically. Is that true? The physical model will not be opened automatically. You must go to Physical Model, right click and Open. And there it is again. So do not panic if you do not see your physical model, it is not gone:)

The reason for not opening the physical model is performance. Usually the physical model consists of many, many xml files and if all those files should be opened on opening the design you might get bored before you are able to use the tool.

What’s next?

I will be speaking about engineered systems in an event organized by Oracle in April and about backup and recovery in May in several cities in Finland.

I will also attend the EOUC presidents’ meeting in May. This year the meeting will be in Sofia, Bulgaria.

In June I will speak in three events:
OUGF
BGOUG
Kscope

And in October I will be one of the five Oracle ACE Directors speaking on
The Nordic ACED Tour (4 countries in 4 days).

no other plans for the Autumn yet….

I have “always” planned that one day I will write a book (or maybe many books). That one day is now: I am writing my first book about database design and Data Modeler. No more details at this point but be prepared to buy it next year:)

WIT

I have always though that WIT (women in technology) is nothing but complaining about things that are wrong or seem to be wrong. So I have always refused to attend these panels, roundtables or interviews. But I had to make a exception last year during the OpenWorld because I was asked to attend the panel by Kellyn Pot’Vin (nobody says no to Kellyn:)). I was surprised to see how interesting it was and how women and men really want to talk about different issues on WIT. I realized I have been wrong not to attend before but still I was not sure what I will bring to these conversations:

– I am on IT, I cannot say why women do not join IT
– I have no plans to leave IT, so I cannot say why women leave IT
etc

So when Kellyn invited me to attend the WIT at the OUGN event I said yes.

During the WIT session at OUGN I did not have much to say but after the session I had a talk with two ladies who attended it and I realized what is my role on WIT sessions: I tell people that I am a woman on IT and I LOVE it! So my role is to tell that there are moments you hate your job (everybody does, men and women) but the main thing is that mostly you love your job.  My role is to show that a woman on IT can be enjoying beeing there and there is no limit what you can do. I am running two companies and a user group, I am a technical expert on my area (I am even awarded as an Oracle ACE Director), I speak and teach, I write and now I am even writing a book.

So I do seen my role on WIT: I am there to inspire other women to join IT and to stay there. And to show that there are no limits on what you can do!

I want to thank Kellyn, OUGN and especially the two ladies I met at the OUGN: You pushed me to the right direction to be able to help more people on IT.

OUGN14

All I want to say is: I love my job.
I am so grateful to the ACE program, user groups and Oracle that I can go and speak about things I know and love and that I can share my knowledge and help other people on it.

I love speaking and sharing knowledge. I love the Oracle community!
So thank you, thank you, thank you!

I just attended the OUGN (Oracle User Group Norway) event with a presentation about database design and Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler. My audience included That Jeff Smith, The Bryn Llewellyn and ACED Brendan Tierney  amoung others. I am sure you can imagine the pressure:) But I enjoyed every second of my presentation! The audience was amazing! They did ask (excellent!) questions… I guess I did not do too badly because Jeff bought me a wine afterwards and said that he can see that I have been teaching. He also corrected that he meant it as a compliment. As a Finn I sure recognize a compliment when I hear one! I was very happy with the presentation and I hope the audience was too.

I attended several excellent presentations at the conference including the keynotes by Andrew Sutherland from Oracle and the duetto by Kellyn Pot’Vin and Tim Gorman.

Connor McDonald was as excellent as always, and the same I can say about Kellyn Pot’Vin, Jeff Smith, Bryn Llewellyn and all those great guys (in Oracle world everybody is a guy, even girls) I always go and listen. But it was the first time I heard Brendan Tierney speaking. He is great! I suggest you register for OUG Harmony (June 5-6) and come to hear him speaking!

During the OUGN14 the OUGN members elected a new board. Congratulations Alice Rossmann, the new chairperson/president of OUGN!

Thank you OUGN board and volunteers! Especially thank you Oyvind Isene for the excellent conference! And just to make you all jealous: I have been invited to speak at the OUGN15! Until next March!

Speaking about security…

I was asked by Oracle to give a presentation about database security to C-level audience. I have come across to that topic many times during my career and I found the idea very tempting so I did agree on doing it. I was very nervous because of two things: this is not what I usually talk about and I was asked to present in Finnish. But I am glad I did it. Preparing the session itself was already an interesting and eye opening experience but the audience really liked the presentation and many people came to me afterwards to say that the event was much, much better than they expected. I encourage you all to take the opportunity to talk about something else every now and then. You will learn a lot!

We had the annual IOUC (International Oracle User Groups Community) meeting at the Oracle HQ in January. I was there representing EOUC (EMEA Oracle User Groups Community) and OUGF (Oracle User Group Finland). This meeting is so great because I have the change to meet my friends and colleagues around the globe.

The next meeting will be combined with the OOW2014, it will be held Thu-Fri on the previous week.

Thank you Oracle for organizing these meetings!

I just realized that I have been speaking in at least 8 events in 2013! No wonder I have been so busy! And what makes it even more impressive is that I was really sick in the beginning of the year and needed to cancel all my sessions. So actually I have been speaking in at least 8 events between April and December.

UKOUG Tech13 (3.12.2013)
DOAG 2013 (19.-21.11.2013)
OOW 2013 (22.-26.9.2013)
OakTable World 2013 (23.-24.9.2013)
Wildcard Conference 2013 (13.9.2013)
ilOUG Tech Days 2013 (10.-11.7.2013)
UKOUG Scotland 2013 (12.6.2013)
OUGF Harmony 2013 (25th anniversary) (15.-17.4.2013)

And these are the ones I remembered now. I should be more organized to keep a list of the events in the future…

Let’s see what 2014 brings…I have some new plans. Let’s see what happens…

UKOUG Tech13 and Data Modeler 4.0 released

05 Thursday Dec 2013

I just got back from the amazing UKOUG Tech13 conference. This time the conference was held in Manchester which to me was a very nice experience: I have a direct flight to Manchester from Helsinki and the city is very nice (everything is just a walking distance away). At the same time with this conference there was also another amazing conference: Oaktable World UK 2013 organized by Margherita and James Morle. So we sure had a busy couple of days in Manchester…

I was attending the RAC Attack with some of my ACE and ACED colleagues. That was great fun! And the best was that I learned to jump the way Yury jumps. So not so sure about RAC but Attack is going well…

My session about Data Modeler was on Tuesday just before the big party at the Football Museum. I was very sure I will only talk to my friend Alex Nuijten (Alex is truly a loyal friend. He has heard my presentation several times and every time he remembers to tell me how good it was.), but to my surprice the room was almost full. Funny thing was that the new version of Data Modeler was releasted just about one hour before my presentation. Luckily I was talking about general things, nothing to do with a certain release. So no worries on that. Just a funny detail to mention.

The audience at the UKOUG Tech13 was just amazing! They did not even get upset on the fact that I spoke overtime and probably they were late from the party! So many good questions and such an amazing level of interaction! They really made me feel like talking again and very soon….

Too bad Christmas is coming and nobody organizes any conferences now…but then I should have time to write my blog….stay tuned…

Next stop: Manchester.

On Sunday the UKOUG Tech2013 starts. This year it will not be in Birmingham but in Manchester. For me this is very good news because I have a direct flight from Helsinki to Manchester. So excited to have the possibility to talk about data modeling and Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler on Tuesday! My session is in Exchange 8 on Tuesday at 5.45 pm. Come and hear me!

See you in Manchester!
