Handling Change Requests with Data Modeler

18 Saturday Oct 2014

Did you know that you can also add change requests to Data Modeler? And you can easily get reports on unfinished change requests…

Below you can see a new change request I added to an entity Customer already on Oct the 2nd.

ChangeRequest

I add change requests quite frequently and definitely have no time to follow them all manually. How do I know that all have been finished?

I go to Find (search), the binoculars icon on the Tool bar.

Find

I select the Advanced Mode and select Change Request as “Object Type”. Then I can see all the properties for a change request on the list of “Searchable Properties”. I select “Completed” and define it should be false.

Search

Press Find.

And voilá. In Results tab I see all the change requests that are not finished.

But. I need a report to our project manager who makes sure somebody finishes this task…

I press the Report button.

Report

I select PDF as the Output Format (I could select HTML, XLS or XLSX if I want), I give the report and the file a name. I could use an existing or create a new template but I am happy with the default report. I press Generate Report. And here we are…

Result

I am ready to inform the project manager…

But what if the project manager wants to edit the change requests but refuses to learn how to use Data Modeler? Do I need to be his/her secretary? no…

I run the report in XLS or XLSX format and pass it to him/her to edit with Microsoft Excel. Then I get it back. The project manager edited the status, completion date and notes (“I have closed this change request/Tim”). I go ahead and right-click the Logical Model in Data Modeler and select “Update model with previously exported XLS (XLSX) file”.

Update

I select the report file Tim sent me. And let it go…

Data Modeler gives me a log on what has been updated:

TheLog

And to prove to you it was really updated, see the Notes for the change request in Data Modeler:

notes

Was that easy? It sure was!

Why did I want to have the change request in Data Modeler? Because now I have all the documentation about the database in one place. On the entity I can always go and check what has been changed and when.Entity

And I can make Impact Analysis based on the fact where this entity has been used.

ImpactAnalysis

Maybe you should think about using Change Requests?

Busy times

I am enjoying my busy life. And feeling honored and humble.
I got a message from RMOUG that my session was accepted for the RMOUG Training Days 2015. I am very honored since I know there was a huge amount of excellent sessions available and they took one of mine. Thank you RMOUG! The RMOUG Training Days will be in Denver in February (17-19).

I was also invited to speak at the Riga DevDays in Latvia in January (22nd). I am honored and proud they reached for me and asked me to speak. The agenda for the event is exellent.

On Sunday I will join the Nordic Oracle ACE Director Tour the first time. I am really looking forward to that. There are five ACE Directors (Debra Lilley, Jonathan Lewis, Simon Haslam, Joze Senagacnik and yours truly) traveling in four countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland) and speaking. OTN (the ACE program) is funding this tour. Four days, four countries.

After the Nordic Tour it’s time to start preparing for the DOAG event in Germany. That will be in November (18-20) and I am very honored and happy they accepted two of my papers! I have attented DOAG conference many times and I enjoy it a lot. I am so happy I have the chance to go there again. DOAG is also organizing a meeting for user groups to gather and meet during the event and I am looking forward to the meeting too. User groups are very close to my heart and when I have a chance to network with other user groups and share best practices or help in any ways I am happy.

Traveling is fun and I love presenting but the downside of it is that I am too busy with my real work. And traveling takes a lot of time (and the jetlags, I do not want to think about that) and you need to prepare your sessions (that is a lot of work) etc. I do not remember how many times I have been asking for longer weeks (maybe 9 days?) and longer days (36 hours?):) So if you think this kind of life is pure fun, think again:) But I am not complaining: I love my work and I am very happy with my life. Just wanted to point out the downsides since I have heard so many times people saying that life like this is easy and just fun. Try it for 6 months and we talk again…

I love my work and I am so glad I have the opportunity to do things I love and enjoy. I just want to say that the only limitation is you: there is nothing in life you could not do if you just feel it’s important and you want to do it. As a child I said I want to be an author. I never actually buried that dream but there just was not a good time for writing. Now I am writing my first book and I love it even more than I was imagining as a child. Now I better get back to writing…

Have a wonderful day and remember you can do whatever you think is worth doing. The only limitation is you and your attitude!

OOW14, the end

OOW14 is now done for me. Sitting at the airport and waiting for my flight to depart.

Yesterday I attended the Bloggers’ meetup very briefly and then joined an early dinner with some friends. I decided not to attend the party since I was very tired, had a lot of work to do, needed to pack and last but not least had three sessions to present on Thursday. On Thursday I had a breakfast with a friend at 7.30 and then I checked out from my hotel and walked to Moscone. I had my first presentation at 9.30 and then I had some user groups meetings. The next session was at 12.00 and the last one at 1.15 pm. I want to thank everybody who attended my sessions during the OOW! I really hope you learned something new and that you enjoyed.

After my sessions I walked to the hotel to have some drinks and snacks with friends before heading to the airport.

Thank you ACE Program! I had fun and I can say without hesitation: this was the best OOW ever!

Safe travels to all and hope to see you soon again!

OOW14, so far

I think this has been my busiest OOW ever. I did not have had time to tweet, blog or anything. Now I took a short break before the Bloggers’ Meetup to do it.

I have not had time for sessions, I have had so much social to do. On Saturday I had a breakfast with some Finns and then joined the Finnish group to vineyards. My first time. That was just amazing. Beautiful scenery, lovely wines and food, and fantastic company.

I started my Sunday with the Bridge Run organized by That Jeff Smith. Because Debra Lilley was so excited we started our walk already at 7.30 and finished about the time the runners started. The Bridge was fantastic. We saw the sun rise and we enjoyed the lovely weather and lovely scenery. Excellent start for a day and for a conference. I visited the user group pavillion several times during the day to say hi to my friends, I met lots of people, attended the ACE dinner and the Finnish dinner.

On Monday we started with breakfast at 6.30 and then the Bay Swim by Oraclenerd Chet (unfortunately he was not there:(, Chet we missed you!) at 7.30. After that we needed some hot coffee:) I once again met lot of people, had luch with a dear friend, polished slides for my session on Tuesday, attended 4-5 parties and went to bed early.

On Tuesday I started with the IOUC Support Committee Meeting at 7.30. Then met some people and gave my first session at 10.45 for a full room. Thank you all who attended! Then we had the traditional ladies’ lunch at the Cheesecake Factory, some preparations for the presentations, lots of meeting people and 4-5 parties again. But early to bed again.

Today is Wednesday and I met a friend for breakfast at 7.30, then prepared our demo with That Jeff Smith, attended the Sustainability Innovation Awards session (I have been one of the judges for many years), attended a birthday party lunch, got my book signed by Brendan, had some birthday cake and now preparing for the bloggers’ meetup. On my way soon…

Highlights from my first ACED Briefing

01 Wednesday Oct 2014

I am in San Francisco now. I arrived on Wednesday afternoon and had a lovely family dinner with my Oracle family: my amazing and lovely Mom (Debra Lilley), my Dad Tim Hall who has a huge fan club (on tours my Mom keeps the line in order when people wants to get his autographs) and my ever-young and legendary grandfather Graham Wood (I call him Gram). I am so proud of my family and hope to have many, many family dinners with them in the future.

On Thursday my first two day Oracle ACE Director briefing started. If you want to hear it in short: wow! Biggest plus: Thomas Kurian. Biggest minus: not hearing enough Maria Colgan.

The ACED briefing was exactly what I expected but also much more than that. As a rookie I am still not quite aware what I am allowed to say and what not so I do not talk about details at all. I only tell you that cool things are coming and I am very convinced that Oracle knows what they are doing so keep on betting Oracle.

On Thursday we heard about Oracle Development Tools, all kinds of clouds, middleware, WebCenter, BPM, WLS, Coherence, Exalogic, OAUX, SOA and finally Thomas Kurian came in…
It was all interesting and I learned very much. The OAUX team was as amazing as can be and I was thinking this cannot get better…but it did. Before I say more I tell you I started Thomas Kurian fan club and it is already quite populated…
Thomas Kurian entered the room. He smiled and said hi to all. The whole entrance was quiet, polite and very modest. In that point I was already curious. I have seen his keynotes and presentations but I have never met him in this kind of event. Thomas started his presentation. Without slides, without notes. The way he told the whole story of Oracle products and product families now and in couple of years was facinating. He moved on logically, clear and peacefully giving us all the impression he knows everything about Oracle product, all of them. Because nobody really can people were asking him tough, deep technical questions, and he replied them all with pleasant voice and knowledge that made me speachless. He was not in a hurry. He had all the time in the world to answer every question people had. Larry, I hope you realize what a jewel you have!
So because of Thomas I cannot say much more about Thursday: I am still without words.

On Friday I was looking forward to the update in database and especially Maria Colgan. Unfortunately she was too busy and could not stay more than a few minutes (people were asking questions to keep her there longer). I understand that she was busy right before the OOW so I am not complaining;) but Maria just happens to be one of my favourite persons so I would have liked to hear more…
We heard about MySQL, met Bob Evans (chief communication officer), learnd about BI platform, APEX, Linux, virtualization and Steven Feuerstein’s inspiring YesSQL message. Stay tuned, this will be interesting!
I think the hightlight of the second day was Dan McClary explainig us Big Data and everything around that. He did a great job! I should have written about Data Modeler on my blog when 4.0.3 came out, I realized it on the briefing. Data Modeler supports (among others) Hive and people did not know that (external table of type Hive)!
I always think that if I know something everybody knows it. Not a very good feature for an expert:(

This experience was fantastic and I will remember it for a long time! Thank you OTN, the ACE Program and the organizing team!

My first ACED Briefing

I am waiting for my first Oracle ACE Director Briefing to start. Exciting! I woke up at 3am to be sure I will not miss it (starts at 8.30):) Jetlag is a wonderful thing….

I was really lucky to have booked the same flights with my friend Julian Dontcheff who is a “senior” ACED and was able to brief me about the briefing. Now I am looking forward to it even more than before…
Also Fiona from UKOUG was on the same flight from London to SFO. She is such a fun and nice person! Had a nice chat and I look forward seeing her during the OOW. Oh, BTW, all you wonderful EOUC presidents: thank you for your supportive emails and great ideas! I will get back to them after the OOW. I love working with user groups!

I just checked the agenda for the briefing. The briefing will be two interesting days at the Oracle HQ and we will hear about EVERYTHING, not just about our own speciality. I really like the idea because I am interested in everything but unfortunately do not have time to learn about anything else but my own area. And now I do! So looking forward to this…

And once again special thanks to my very own Oracle-Dad, Tim Hall, who gave me this idea to write blog posts while travellig and posting them when possible. It works so well! And thanks for the wonderful family dinner last night, Tim, Debra and Graham. I was really tired but enjoying! But since I am the kid I am allowed to be tired, right?:)

OOW14, only about a week before it starts…

The biggest Oracle gathering is just around the corner. I am really looking forward to it as always. This year will be special because I will have my first Oracle ACE Director briefing just before the OOW.

I have been really busy this Summer and especially now before the OOW. My everyday job as a CEO for Miracle Finland has been keeping me busy as always, writing my first book has been an amazing experience (2 more chapters to go…) and preparing my sessions for the OOW has really nailed it totally;) Not to mention my trips to different events to speak, running the user group etc. But I do not complain: I love my work. And during the Summer I had one week really off and I spent it in Rome, Italy with my fantastic family. So life is good.

Now I must finish my presentations for the OOW so that I can upload them to the system. Write a little bit about Subversion and Data Modeler. Finish quite a bit of work. Pack my stuff and be at the airport early on Wednesday morning.

On Thursday it all starts. The ACED briefing and actually also the IOUC (International Orale User Group Community) Summit. I was planning to attend both but that was made impossible (long story) so I will only attend the ACED briefing. I hope my friends will have a great IOUC meeting and I really wish I were there with you too. But I know I will see you all at the OOW and hear all that was decided and talked about in the meeting.

In Friday evening I will move my bags to San Francisco and start the OOW preparations. On Saturday morning I will have a breakfast with a good friend of mine, Julian Dontcheff, and then off to vineyards. I have been on San Fra more than I can count but never, ever had a spare time to visit the vineyards. I am really excited about it.

On Sunday I will attend the legendary Bridge Run (at 8.30, join us!) organized by Jeff Smith and I will actually lead the high-heel runners (=walkers). You are most welcome to join my “team”! Sunday is also a speacial day for user groups: there is a whole track of excellent sessions from EOUC amoung others ( https://oracleus.activeevents.com/2014/connect/focusOnDoc.do?focusID=19052). A very special thing is our 12 Looks at Oracle Database 12c: EOUC Short Talks, short sessions about 12c presented by ACEs and ACE Directors from EMEA. And of course at The User Group Pavilion (Moscone South, Upper Lobby) you can meet the EMEA user groups (EOUC) from Sunday till Wednesday. Sunday is also the day for OTN Kick-off, Annual ACE Dinner and Finnish dinner (country dinner) among others.

Monday will start with the legendary Bay Swim (7.30) by Oraclenerd. I know I have been swimming in ice but I still feel a bit unsure about this but will definitely do it, no doubt. Then I will attend some Exadata sessions etc. And finally to the Accenture event in The Exploratorium. Looks like a full day.

Tuesday starts with the IOUC Global Support Committee meeting at 7.30. My first own session is 10.45 in Moscone South – 310 (Successful Oracle Exadata Implementation: A Real-Life Example CON3684). I really hope to see you there! I will be presenting with my friends Elise Valin-Raki and Tuomas Pystynen. From 4-6pm I will be hanging around with the amazing ODTUG people in Chevy’s and at 6 pm I will join the 20th anniversary party for OraclePress (congratulations!). And after that I will go and meet my friends from Rittman-Mead. Full day again.

Wednesday officially starts at 10.15 when I go and attend the Sustainability Innovation Awards event to honor the winners of the contest that used to be called ECO-award. I have been judging this award for many years and I feel that it is really important to have this kind of recognizion for companies who use Oracle products for more ecological solutions. I am really excited about this. At 1pm I will go and meet my friend Brendan Tierney to get his signature to his amazing new book (Predictive Analytics Using Oracle Data Miner). If you do not have it yet, OOW will be a great place to buy it. At 5.15 pm I will join the traditional Bloggers’ meetup sponsored by OTN and Pythian. It will be great as always, I already know. LOVE your bloggers:) And then if I am not too tired I will attend the Appreciation Event in Treasure Island.

If you think my week has been busy so far you have not seen anything yet:)
Thursday is the day I fly back home. My flight is in the evening a little after 7. I start the morning at 9.30 presenting a session together with THAT Jeff Smith (Collaborative Design with Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler CON7333) in Moscone South – 307. I do not think you should miss this session…it will be fun… At 10.45 (or 12.00, I am not sure because I was told it was moved to 12.00 but the Content Catalog still says 10.45) I will be speaking in Marriott Marquis – Golden Gate B with a topic Getting Started with Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler CON3576. And if you did not hear me enough come back to Marriott Marquis – Golden Gate B at 1.15 pm to hear a session by me and two of my friends, Elise and Ursula, about Preventing DBA Burnout by Implementing Maximum Security Architecture on CON4733. And that is my official ending of OOW14 and it’s time to change clothes and head to the airport. When I was at the OOW the first time I was so tired after the event I fell asleep at the airport. It might happen again…

So this is my schedule before I go and see the content catalog. On Monday I will see it and then my schedule will look even busier:)

But the best thing about OOW is networking and meeting everybody so please come and find me to say hi and talk a little about life and Oracle! Or whatever you think is worth talking.

I will be tweeting during the week. You will find my tweets by following @helifromfinland in Twitter.

Oh, last but not least there will be the traditional airhockey tournament during the OOW: Alex vs Heli. And that is serious… 😉 Right, Alex Nuijten?

I want a Subversion repository!

09 Saturday Aug 2014

I needed a Subversion repository for my tests with Data Modeler. I want it to be on my laptop because I might not have internet connection to the real Subversion repository and this will be my sandbox anyway. Nothing fancy but a real version control. I do not feel like installing and configuring and finding out that the version of the product is too old/too new etc. You know what I mean, don’t you?

Ok, this is how to do the whole thing easily without any gray hair. I created a Subversion repository with SQL Developer. Just go to “Team” menu, “Subversion” and “Create Local Repository”. Follow the instructions and there you are: a brand new Subversion repository. Tip: create the folder for your repository before creating the repository, since the tool will not create it for you.

But I wanted to use it with Data Modeler and I use the standalone product. How does this help me? I am now in SQL Developer and have a repository but what next? Go to Versions Browser in SQL Developer, right-click and select “Export Connections…”. While the SQL Developer created my repository it also created the connection for it and I can use it also with Data Modeler. Just select the location for your connection file and press OK. Then close SQL Developer and open Data Modeler. Go to Versions Browser (if you cannot see it go to the Team menu and select Versions), right-click and select “Import Connections…”. Select the file you just saved and that’s it.

Now you have a Subversion repository and a connection from Data Modeler to that.

Bonus: You might want to create branch, tag and trunk in your directory. Just go to the Versions Browser again. Select your new repository, right-click and select “New Remote Directory…”. Then type “branch” for the “Directory Name” and press ok. That’s it. Do the same for tag and trunk and you are all set for version control and data modeling. Enjoy!

Kscope14

I am in London waiting for my flight home.

This was my first Kscope as an attendee and as a speaker. I loved every minute of the conference! It did not start very well, probably because June was really busy for me. First of all I did not book the hotel in time and could not get a room from Sheraton. Well, I did get a room from Westin and that hotel was really nice. Secondly I forgot to book the flights and did it at the last minute (and I payed for my mistake quite dearly) by a help of a travelling agent that found me from Twitter. Isn’t that cool! Well, unfortunately that was not all… Next I realized I had not registered for the conference and the registration was closed already. Thanks to Lauren who seems to understand us speakers better that we do ourselves handled everything and there was no issue at all. I could have stopped here and try to be smart but no… Two hours before my session I went to check the conference app to see that I have the right version of my presentation there…no…it was not the right version, in matter of the fact it was a completely wrong presentation. Yep. I did upload the right one but updated it with the wrong one just before I left Finland. Well, I uploaded the right one and one more time checked that my slides on my laptop were the right slides. Now I was getting nervous: what will happen next? Mr Murphy was obviously very fond of me.

I was a panelist on WIT panel hosted by Kellyn Pot’vin. I think this panel was really good. We had a huge audience, both women and men, and they really were interested in the topic. A lot of interaction!

I had my session, 9 Use Cases for Data Modeler, right after the panel. I was quite nervous, which I am usually not. But when I started to present and my audience was just fantastic I was not nervous at all: I enjoyed. I had a great audience! Thank you! You really inspire me!

The content of the conference was very high and everything was so fluent. I will need to ask ODTUG board for some advice on getting sponsors and more attendees. I do not think many user groups today can say they have more attendees every year and sponsors signing already for next year. Well done!

It is always important to have good content and plenty of good food in conferences but still I think the best is to meet friends and make some new ones. I was so happy to see many of my friends and finally to meet some of my ‘virtual friends’. I attended several sessions and learnt a lot. I gave a couple of interviews on WIT and on ACE program. I met my publisher and my tech editors. I had a great dinner sponsored by the ACE program (thank you, Vikki!) and I even drunk some beer (luckily Jeff Smith came to help me out, I was quite desperate:-), I do not drink beer and I do not like it). And I was so glad to see Mike Riley and I wish all the best to him and his family.

Thank you ODTUG for having me as a speaker and letting me to attend and experience this amazing conference! And thank you for the great party! Cannot wait Kscope15 and Florida!

What I do not get is why do they say it always rains in Seattle?

BGOUG conference is over

Done with the BGOUG conference. The content was amazing with several international and exceptionally big number of local speakers (fantastic!). And the organization was as excellent as always when my friend Milena Gerova has something to do with it. Thank you! Absolutely great conference!

This evening was one of the hightlights of my journey on user groups. We had several nations sitting in the same table (Bulgaria, Serbia, Poland, Belgium, Romania, Finland, …) and sharing their visions on European history and different cultures. I can tell you that none of this was taught to me when I was in school! So today I really learnt that history the way it is written and taught might not be the real truth. User group events are not just learning about Oracle but also learning about your own history and different cultures. I enjoyed this evening very much and I want to thank Milena and her team and those people who educated me this evening. I am sure I learnt very much. And I did make many new and good friends today.

And BTW I believe my sessions went well. At least they were well attended and I was told by many that they enjoyed and learnt. I am very happy about it. Thank you for letting me speak! I love my job!

Now it’s time to pack. I am travelling home tomorrow morning. Good night!
